Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups diced apples
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking pan.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture and stir until combined.
  • Fold in diced apples and walnuts (if using).
  • Spread batter evenly into prepared baking pan.
  • Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days. Can be frozen for up to 2 months.
