Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 cups diced apples (such as Granny Smith)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tbsp milk (for glaze)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)

Equipment

  • mixing bowls
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • stand mixer with dough hook (optional)
  • Rolling Pin
  • knife
  • baking dish
  • oven
  • whisk

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, sugar, melted butter, eggs, and salt. Mix to form dough, knead until smooth, about 8–10 minutes. Let rise 1 hour until doubled in size.
  3. Meanwhile, prepare filling: Mix diced apples with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  4. Punch down risen dough. Roll into a large rectangle. Spread with softened butter and sprinkle evenly with apple filling.
  5. Roll dough tightly into a log. Slice into 12 rolls and place in a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake rolls for 25 minutes, until golden brown.
  7. Make glaze: Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over warm rolls before serving.

Notes

Best served warm. You can make these ahead: prepare the rolls and refrigerate overnight, then bake in the morning. Store leftovers covered at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerate up to 5 days.
