Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tablespoons milk, plus more to thin if needed
  • 4 teaspoons light corn syrup
  • red and green food coloring
  • festive sprinkles for topping

Equipment

  • mixing bowls For preparing dough and icing.
  • Whisk or hand mixer To blend ingredients smoothly.
  • baking sheet Line with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • cooling rack To cool cookies completely before icing.
  • Spoon or small spatula For spreading icing neatly.

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the oil, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, salt, baking powder, and powdered sugar. Mix until smooth. Add flour gradually and stir until a soft, smooth dough forms.
  2. Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight. Chilling is mandatory for easy shaping and to prevent spreading.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Scoop about 1 tablespoon of dough and roll it into a rope about 4 inches long and 1/2 inch thick. Form into a circle and gently press the ends together to seal, leaving a visible hole in the center.
  4. Place the shaped donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet 1 inch apart. Bake for 16–18 minutes, or until lightly golden on top. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  5. In two small bowls, divide the icing powdered sugar. Add equal parts milk and corn syrup to each, stirring until smooth and spreadable. Tint one bowl red and the other green with food coloring.
  6. Dip the top of each cooled cookie into the colored icing or use the back of a spoon to spread. Immediately add festive sprinkles before the glaze hardens.
  7. Allow icing to harden completely before stacking or storing. Keep cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Notes

Be sure to chill the dough for at least 1 hour before shaping to prevent spreading. Shape the ropes thin and seal the ends firmly for a perfect open donut center.
